In sleeveless green paisley, pink barrette tucking back tendrils, Louise cools herself before the fan, channeling Beverly Johnson, Naomi Sims, or Jean Shrimpton, sixties and seventies fashion photos close by. She emulates their vintage, craving excitement in the unseasonal weather. ‘Funny,’ she thinks, ‘Next week’s Thanksgiving, and it’s ninety degrees.’

She strikes poses, checking the experts for inspiration, wondering if the sudden heat has made anyone else restless.

She hopes Earl will be searching when she walks by in strappy minidress, white boots and cap, like Carnaby street in Kansas, the last of summer spilling between them this autumn, golden, sweet as honey.

The prompt was “the unseasonal weather” – from Julia.
