” ‘Lest we forget?’ ” she repeated, chuckling. “What’re you talking about?”

He wondered if she understood. “Be careful young lady. You’re treading on dangerous ground.”

She drew a breath. “You want me to be scared, but I’m not. You don’t know me, but you’re assuming I need this grade so much that I’ll take anything from you. Professor, you’re wrong.”

A thin smile cut between his laser stare and quivering chin. “Perhaps you’d prefer to be expelled?”

An easier smile crossed her lips. Leaning forward, she hissed, “Try.” Stepping away, she added, “I’ve known hell. You are navel lint. No match. Go ahead. Try.”
