Apple was my favorite. In clear white lettered wrappers, the translucent green jewels delighted my eyes first. Wine candy made me feel grown up, though it wasn’t, when ’60s springtime thaws brought light sweaters in expectant breezes and cravings for gem colored treats.
Nonsensical names still turn my head while maturity directs me to lists of shoulds, weighting me with today’s stultifications and wounding unknowns.
Without realizing I forgot, I’m now reminded, recalling watermelon and apple – flavors of sight and tongue, dreaming them onto paper while reaching for what’s happening now in New Year’s glass, microwave tray, a song heard on TV.
Inspired by the memory of wine candy.
