Release from prison lifted Conlee high in the saddle anticipating open arms, no disbeliever riding low without faith in something better, courting destruction, itching to hasten lonely ruin. He believed she was waiting.

The guard who’d stolen his watch let him keep her picture. In his vest pocket now, it warmed his knowing heart during the long ride.

Horton was released days before, Dakota territory calling to him, not Kentucky as he’d told his cellmate. Conlee’s tales sparked Horton’s interest in western banks filled with rancher’s money, and the woman there who eased his stay in the depths of hell.
