Borrower, Lender – Version #One

Coworkers let me borrow a few dollars three weeks after I’d been hired at the deli. My paycheck hadn’t come in again. I needed groceries.

My first check came the next week.

Sheila seemed uncomfortable when I returned her money. Gene and Randy were weird when I repaid theirs.

In the breakroom, chuckling, Paul wouldn’t take his.

“Why’s everyone acting funny?” I asked.

“Nobody expected you’d actually pay them back.”

I looked at Paul’s money in my hand. “Why?”

He shrugged. “Keep it. Or pass it on.” He shrugged again and walked away smiling.

I wondered why I was embarrassed.
