The Beginning of Numb

Mama held Tasha where they stretched out on the floor. Daddy cradled Bobby, holding him down tight in front of the couch. My little brother squirmed for a better TV view.

“Be still,” Daddy said.

Bobby whined. “I wanna see!”

I was lying behind the chair, watching Judge Judy yell, not really listening. Mama laughed at whatever she’d said. Daddy called the plaintiff a fool for loaning someone money.

More shots came, faster and closer than before.

“I don’t want to live here!” I was surprised by my voice ringing out against afternoon gunfire.

Daddy said, “Where you gonna go?”

The prompt was the word ‘numb’ and a discussion about one of Jessie’s stories at her blog.
