Baby Sister

Evie toddled in, hands clapping, debuting new teeth with that look she’d sport before bursting into laughter. Auntie Jean focused on her diaperless, plaid underpants.

“What if she wets herself?” she complained from the sofa.

Mom ignored Auntie as she crossed the room staring straight into her big sister’s eyes. She reached a hand down for the baby’s curls as she passed. Evie closed her eyes and leaned into Mom’s palm like the kitty did sometimes, then she twirled as if her life depended on it, and flung herself onto Auntie Jean’s lap.

Auntie sputtered, aghast as Evie hugged her.
